Prepare, Don’t Rush: Setting the Stage for Spring

February brings a familiar temptation: the first warm afternoon, the sun slanting just right, and suddenly spring feels close enough to touch. But wise gardeners know this is a month for preparation and restraint, not impatience.

Late frosts are still possible in Charleston, yet there is plenty that can—and should—be done. Cool-season vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, peas, carrots, and radishes can be planted now, thriving in the mild days and cool nights. These early crops remind us that spring does not arrive all at once; it unfolds.

This is also the perfect time to start seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, and summer flowers. Watching seedlings emerge on a windowsill is one of gardening’s quiet joys—a promise held in miniature.

Philodendron: Plant of the Year 2024

Poinsettias

Poinsettias – Euphorbia pulcherrima: this quintessential holiday plant, hailing the arrival of the Christmas season, is known as “The most beautiful Euphorbia.” As its translated Latin name illustrates, it is one of the most exquisite in a genus containing over 2000 varieties of flowering plants. Though beautiful, one must take care to avoid contact with the latex-like, milky sap, that can irritate skin. However, its vivid variety of color combinations make it a perfect addition to any holiday display.

Care:
Poinsettias prefer to be in light, well draining soil, that is kept moderately moist. Never allow the soil to completely dry out, while at the same time, ensure the plant is not left in standing water. Poinsettias thrive in temperatures between 50 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit. While blooming, they do not need fertilizer. Poinsettias do well in bright, indirect sunlight for approximately 6 hours per day. With the proper care, they can provide many weeks of colorful splendor.
