The Garden at Dusk: Why Evening May Be the Most Beautiful Time in a Southern Garden

There is a quiet transformation that takes place in a Southern garden as the sun slips below the horizon. The day’s heat begins to fade, the light softens, and familiar flowers seem to take on an entirely new character. It is a time of peace, reflection, and simple enjoyment—a reminder that a garden is not merely something we tend, but somewhere we live.

When the Garden Takes a Deep Breath

Charleston summers are known for warm afternoons, but those who venture into the garden during the evening discover another side of the season.

As the temperatures begin to cool, even slightly, plants seem refreshed. The golden light of late afternoon gives way to the gentle blues and violets of twilight. Long shadows stretch across the lawn, and every path invites a slower pace.

Evening encourages us to linger. A few extra minutes on the porch often become an hour before we even notice.

Fragrance Comes Alive

Some of summer’s most beloved plants save their finest performance for the evening.

The sweet perfume of gardenias drifts through the air. Confederate jasmine clinging to a fence or arbor releases its unmistakable fragrance. Moonflowers begin to unfurl their large white blossoms as daylight fades, welcoming nighttime pollinators.

Even herbs contribute to the experience. Brush your hand gently across rosemary, basil, mint, or lavender, and their fragrance becomes part of the evening breeze.

A garden experienced through scent is every bit as memorable as one enjoyed through sight.

Colors Change with the Light

The setting sun paints the landscape differently than the bright light of midday.

Hydrangeas seem to glow with soft blues, pinks, and creamy whites. Crape myrtles catch the final rays of sunshine before standing gracefully against the evening sky. Deep green foliage becomes richer, while white flowers almost seem to shine on their own.

Landscape lighting adds another dimension, gently illuminating pathways, ornamental trees, and favorite garden features without overwhelming the natural beauty of the night.

Nature Settles In

As evening arrives, the garden belongs to a different cast of visitors.

Songbirds sing their final melodies before settling into the trees. Hummingbirds make one last visit to nectar-rich flowers. Butterflies quietly disappear as lightning bugs begin their magical dance across the landscape.

A gentle chorus of tree frogs and crickets reminds us that the garden never truly sleeps—it simply changes shifts.

These small moments are easy to miss in the busyness of everyday life, yet they are often the memories we treasure most.

Create an Evening Retreat

You don’t need a large estate to enjoy an evening garden.

A comfortable bench beneath a shade tree, a pair of rocking chairs on the porch, or a small bistro table tucked among flowering containers can become your favorite place to end the day.

Soft landscape lighting, decorative lanterns, and attractive ceramic pots filled with colorful annuals can transform even a modest outdoor space into a welcoming retreat.

Adding fragrant plants near patios, walkways, and seating areas allows you to enjoy their perfume every time you step outside.

The Joy of Simply Being There

Gardens have always offered more than flowers and foliage.

They invite conversation with family and friends. They provide quiet places to read, reflect, or simply listen to the sounds of nature. They remind us that beauty often reveals itself when we slow down enough to notice it.

Perhaps that is why so many gardeners say their favorite time outdoors isn’t the first bloom of spring or the brilliant colors of autumn—it is a peaceful summer evening when the day’s work is finished and the garden quietly welcomes them home.

This July, take a little time after sunset to stroll through your landscape. Pause to admire a blooming hydrangea, breathe in the fragrance of a nearby gardenia, or simply sit beneath the shade of an old tree as the evening settles around you.

At Hyams Garden Center, we believe gardens are meant to be enjoyed as much as they are cultivated. Whether you’re looking for fragrant flowering shrubs, beautiful container plants or inspiration for creating your own evening retreat, our knowledgeable team is always here to help.

We invite you to visit us this summer and discover new ways to make your garden a place of beauty, comfort, and lasting memories—for every hour of the day, and especially at dusk.

Beat the Heat: July Garden Care & Protection Tips

Charleston summers are part of what makes the Lowcountry so beautiful. Long days, lush landscapes, and gardens bursting with color are the rewards of warm weather. But July also brings intense heat, high humidity, and occasional dry spells that can challenge even well-established plants. With a little extra care, your landscape can remain healthy, vibrant, and beautiful throughout the hottest weeks of summer.

Water Deeply—Not Just Frequently

One of the most common mistakes during summer is watering too lightly. A quick sprinkle wets only the surface, encouraging shallow roots that struggle when temperatures climb.

Instead, water deeply in the early morning. This allows moisture to soak into the soil before the heat of the day arrives and gives foliage time to dry, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

Most established garden beds benefit from about one inch of water each week, either from rainfall or irrigation. Newly planted shrubs, trees, and annual flowers may require more frequent attention until their roots become established.

Mulch Is Your Garden’s Best Friend

A fresh layer of mulch is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your landscape during July.

Two to three inches of pine straw or mulch helps:

– Keep soil cooler

– Reduce evaporation

– Suppress weeds

– Improve soil as it naturally breaks down

Be careful not to pile mulch against tree trunks or the crowns of shrubs and perennials. Leave a little breathing room around the base of each plant.

Give Containers Extra Attention

Plants growing in pots and containers experience summer very differently than those planted in the ground. Their roots heat up more quickly and the soil dries much faster.

Check containers daily during hot weather. Some may require watering every day, especially those displayed on sunny porches, patios, or driveways.

If possible, group containers together or move delicate plants where they receive afternoon shade during periods of extreme heat.

Take It Easy on Fertilizer

While healthy plants appreciate nutrition, July is not the time for heavy fertilizing.

Large applications of fertilizer encourage tender new growth that can become stressed during periods of extreme heat.

If plants appear healthy, continue normal watering and allow them to maintain steady growth. Slow-release fertilizers applied according to label directions are generally preferable to quick bursts of nitrogen during midsummer.

Keep Flowers Blooming

Many summer annuals will continue producing beautiful blooms if spent flowers are removed regularly.

Deadheading encourages plants to direct their energy toward producing new flowers rather than seeds.

Light trimming also improves air circulation, helping reduce disease problems during Charleston’s humid summer weather.

Watch for Summer Pests

Heat and humidity create favorable conditions for certain insects and plant diseases.

Keep an eye out for:

– Aphids

– Spider mites

– Whiteflies

– Powdery mildew

– Leaf spot diseases

Inspect plants regularly, especially the undersides of leaves where many insects like to hide. Catching problems early often makes them much easier to manage.

If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, bring a leaf or a photo to Hyams Garden Center. Our knowledgeable staff is always happy to help identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions.

Lawn Care During the Heat

A healthy lawn can withstand summer stress surprisingly well when cared for properly.

Raise your mower height slightly during July. Taller grass shades the soil, helping retain moisture while encouraging deeper root growth.

Continue watering deeply rather than frequently, and avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.

Remember that some slowing of lawn growth during periods of intense heat is perfectly natural.

Enjoy Your Garden

July is not only a season for maintaining the garden—it is also a season for enjoying it.

Take a walk through your landscape early in the morning while everything is fresh with dew, or relax outdoors in the evening as the day’s heat begins to fade. You’ll notice butterflies, hummingbirds, blooming hydrangeas, colorful crape myrtles, and all the beauty that makes Charleston gardens so special.

A little attention now will reward you with months of healthy growth and lasting beauty. Whether you’re refreshing flower beds, adding new containers, selecting mulch, or simply looking for trusted gardening advice, the friendly team at Hyams Garden Center is here to help. We look forward to helping your garden thrive all summer long.

Create a Peaceful Garden Corner This May

In the midst of busy days, your garden can become something more than just a space to maintain—it can become a place of rest.

This May, consider creating a small, peaceful corner where you can sit, breathe, and simply enjoy the beauty around you.

It doesn’t require much:

A simple chair or bench placed in a quiet spot

Soft greenery to create a sense of enclosure

Fragrant plants such as jasmine or herbs

A small table for tea, a book, or a moment of reflection

This space does not need to be large or elaborate. Even a modest corner can become a sanctuary when it is cared for with intention.

Imagine beginning your morning here, or pausing in the evening as the light softens and the air cools. These quiet moments are often the most meaningful.

At Hyams Garden Center, we would be delighted to help you select plants that bring both beauty and calm into your surroundings.

Visit us and begin creating your own garden retreat.

Issues to be looked into before the Installation of a Fountain

Fountain installation can be carried out efficiently if the following issues are addressed prior to the installation:

Accessibility of the Area for Installation: Take into account the size and weight of the fountain you have selected and thus determine the best route to bring the fountain to the location where it has to be installed. That is the key. For smaller fountain this may be inconsequential. However, one needs to pay attention to the issue of accessibility if you have to bring in pool or wall basins and other large pieces. The wellbeing of your home and fountain as well as the safety of our installation personnel will have to be clearly thought through. Fountains that include basins with diameters 70” or larger require that our delivery truck be able to back up directly to the installation site.

Clear the Area prior to Installation: A clean and properly grated area is ideal for installation. Please do your best to clear the area. If any existing landscaping, etc., needs to be removed please do so or notify us before delivery. If additional equipment or materials are needed please let us know beforehand, as this will aid in completing the job properly and in a timely fashion. For example, if the area is boggy, we suggest mixing in contractor’s sand to improve drainage and help stabilize the fountain. On the other hand, if the fountain is going on a deck or a wall and drilling is necessary to hang the fountain, conceal the cord or access electricity, the proper drill and specific bits will be necessary. We aim to arrive properly equipped and be able to finish the job efficiently. However, we need to tap into your knowledge of the location of installation and cooperation to get it done right the very first time.

Electricity and Access to Water are the basic necessities of installing a fountain. Electricity must be in place before our personnel arrive on site for installation. If you do not have electricity in the area, we suggest that you have a standard outdoor electrical box on a GFI breaker installed in an accessible place nearby the fountain and within the reach of the pump’s cord. Finally, before our personnel leave the installation site, they must fill water and operate the fountain to ensure that it is working properly. If the fountain site is a considerable distance from the water source, please make sure to supply additional hose.

Please contact Hyams Garden Center at 843-795-4570 if you have any further questions or concerns. It is important to know as much as possible before we arrive on the site of installation in order to save us all valuable time and money. Your cooperation in helping us to improve our service is always appreciated.
