Celosia plants, known for their vibrant and unique flower heads, are a captivating addition to any Charleston garden, especially during the autumn season. These striking blooms come in a variety of colors, including fiery reds, bright oranges, and deep purples, making them perfect for enhancing the warm tones of fall. The flowers, which resemble plumes or cockscombs, add an exotic touch to garden beds and containers, standing out amidst the more muted hues of traditional autumn foliage.
Beyond their beauty, Celosia plants offer incredible variety in both shape and size, making them versatile for different garden styles. Dwarf varieties can be used as stunning borders, while taller types create dramatic focal points. The intricate, feathery textures of Celosia blossoms provide a delightful contrast when paired with other fall favorites like mums and asters, creating a garden that is visually dynamic and rich with color and texture.
Caring for Celosia in Charleston’s autumn climate is relatively easy, as these plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. Regular watering helps maintain their lush appearance, though they are moderately drought-tolerant, making them well-suited to the region’s variable weather. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage new growth, ensuring that your garden remains vibrant throughout the season. With a little attention, Celosia can transform your autumn garden into a lively and colorful sanctuary, celebrating the beauty of the season in full bloom.
“Philo” (Love), “Dendron” (Tree)
In their natural habitat, the aptly named philodendron loves to extend its vines around trees in the low-light understory of Central and South American tropical forests. With their evergreen qualities and low maintenance needs, upright or climbing philodendron varieties are a favorite among house plant enthusiasts. Their array of leaf colors, shapes and sizes, gently and splendidly enhance the beauty of indoor spaces. Whether you are new to houseplant gardening or a professed “plantaholic,” the peaceful philodendron can wind its way around your heart and share an indoor breath of fresh air for the start of your New Year 2024.
Visit the Green House at Hyams Garden Center for a professional quality and variety of philodendron choices.
Poinsettias – Euphorbia pulcherrima: this quintessential holiday plant, hailing the arrival of the Christmas season, is known as “The most beautiful Euphorbia.” As its translated Latin name illustrates, it is one of the most exquisite in a genus containing over 2000 varieties of flowering plants. Though beautiful, one must take care to avoid contact with the latex-like, milky sap, that can irritate skin. However, its vivid variety of color combinations make it a perfect addition to any holiday display.

Care:
Poinsettias prefer to be in light, well draining soil, that is kept moderately moist. Never allow the soil to completely dry out, while at the same time, ensure the plant is not left in standing water. Poinsettias thrive in temperatures between 50 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit. While blooming, they do not need fertilizer. Poinsettias do well in bright, indirect sunlight for approximately 6 hours per day. With the proper care, they can provide many weeks of colorful splendor.
